Tetrad types.

Suppose that a diploid yeast with genetic constitution AB/ab undergoes meiosis. The following types are distinguishable haploid products of meiosis:

These types are sometimes abbreviated PD (of just P), T, and NPD (or just N) when no confusion can result. (Note that dominance plays no role here, as we are dealing with haploid organisms.)

Exercise 1. Ordered tetrads scored at two loci fall naturally into 7 classes. Enumerate them.

With tetrad data it is possible to decide whether two loci are on the same chromosome or not, according to the frequencies of the three types: P, T and N.

Exercise 2. (cf Strickberger Ex 7-14) Prove the preceding assertion.
